Choosing Freedom

Jordan was given the choice: go to prison or take a swing at sobriety with Hope for Freedom. He wasn’t the first (or the last) to be offered this choice.

Jordan chose Hope for Freedom and began his recovery journey.

Surprising even himself, Jordan found something here that he hadn’t found in the many other recovery facilities that his Dad, desperate to save his life, had checked him into over the years.

He found a human connection: a relationship with a counselor and a mentor that would take him all the way. This connection would allow him the space and opportunity to finally talk, share and unpack the trauma that was keeping him in the addiction that nearly took his life more than once.

Jordan started using alcohol and drugs as a teen.

His addiction took a dark turn when he lost someone he loved deeply. His grandmother, who raised him alongside his Dad after his Mom left, died when Jordan was 20. This loss was painful and drove him deeper into his fledgling relationship with drugs.

“In the last few years, my Dad has had to resuscitate me 4 or 5 times using Narcan,” Jordan shares.

Using street drugs is more dangerous than ever. Last year more than 2,200 people died of illicit drug overdoses in BC. Surviving so many overdoses, Jordan is among the lucky ones.

On a Saturday in August 2022, Jordan celebrated two years of sobriety with his Dad and the friends and mentors from Hope for Freedom that he’s come to call family.

Jordan’s Dad remembers the years when Jordan was on the streets, “For a parent, the constant worrying was exhausting. Every day.  Every night. Always wondering: is he going to be alive in the morning? Now that he’s in recovery I can actually sleep. It changes everything.”

Today, Jordan’s Hope for Freedom family are also his co-workers. He’s taken on the role of Associate Director at Hope for Freedom Lodge in Maple Ridge. He works to keep this 30-bed recovery home running smoothly, ready to welcome guys like him who need a safe, clean place to turn their lives around.
